The Year We Disappeared by Cylin Busby & John Busby

The Year We Disappeared

The poem "Revenge" by Kim Hooten is similar to the way one of the main characters is feeling in the story. Throughout the novel, John has two goals. His primary goal is to protect his family and the second is to get revenge. I think the poem and John's feelings are similar becuase they both want vengeance and they will not be satissfied until they get it. In one chapter of the book, John was shot in the face, but he knew it was not an accident. Someone wanted John dead. Damage was done to him physically and mentally. John  wanted revenge and whoever tried to kill him had "made a grave mistake" (Hooten).

In the novel, John is constantly expressing his feelings through thoughts, and "[his] anger causes  [him] pain inside" (Hooten). After his recovery he will be out to get revenge and "[a] curse will last for on and on" (Hooten). I think the poem and John's feelings are similar becuase they both want revenge since they have been hurt.

Revenge

Tears the mind can't tell are true,
Pain the heart can't share.
Anger wrapped up in deceit,
It's more than I can bear.

The hurt and torture deep inside,
The scalding pain of hate.
The sadness deep inside my soul,
That anger did create.

The anger causes pain inside,
Too deep to understand.
And the pain, in turn, will cause,
More malice to my hand.

The scourge I lay upon you now,
You surely cannot break.
This curse will last for on and on,
You've made a grave mistake.
Kim Hooten

  1. This is a really great song to go along with your book! Also, this story sounds very interesting. Do you have any other stories by John Busby that you would recommend to read?
