Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

I have chosen the song "Changes" by David Bowie because it really embodies the idea that this book (Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell) will change the way you see success.

The story discusses the many influences that dictate success, and why so many of us have misconceptions about the way success is distributed. In a very intriguing passage in the book, the author talks about the way the college you attend has very little bearing on your success, and of those who do attend prestigious colleges or universities, your accomplishment at those colleges/universities has little bearing one ones success.

He also tries to levitate misconceptions about the influence of IQ on ones success; He shows that someone whom has an IQ of 150 would have similar potential for success than someone with an IQ of 200.

The book is an extremely interesting and engaging read that I would recommend to almost anyone. Malcolm Gladwell presents an extremely persuasive piece of literature, which will almost certainly sway your views on success and the influence of luck in our society.

Lyrics:

Oh yeah
Mm
Still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But Ive never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
Im much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days float through my eyes
But stil the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Don't tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Wheres your shame
Youve left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Ah changes are taking the pace Im going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Oh, look out you rock n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now you're gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time

  1. Heck of a good book, Joe. I read it, too.

Keys to success are passion and intelligence, but they only go so far. Hard work, as expressed by putting in those thousands of hours of work on a top that it takes to attain mastery, is essential to real success.

Glad you read this book. Gladwell delivers an important message here, that success isn't about connections, it's not about IQ, it's not about anything so much as that fierce hunger that drives people to put in the long hours needed to become an expert.
